First division one miniature to bloom and viridiflorus hybrids

  1. All looking very good to me. Nice to see your season is starting with a bang! The reflex in Chilito x Koop04-56 come from using an N. viridiflorus with reflexed petals.

  3. Such beautiful flowers, Larry!  Congrats!  Nice miniature trumpet and I especially love Chilito x Koop 04-56.  What size is it? It sure looks like a Division 6 but I see Harold’s note about using a reflexed viridiflorus.  So would it go in Div. 12?  Div. 12 is eventually going to have a lot of very interesting flowers in it!

  5. Becky: I would put the Chilito x Koop 04-56 into Divison 6. the main characteristic of the division is a reflexed perianth, not whether it has cyclamineus in its ancestry.

  6. Becky, I checked and measured the bloom this afternoon. Was surprised to see that it didn’t seem to have as much reflex as yesterday. It seemed bigger and measured 52mm.  Was expecting more reflex, as it sometimes takes cyc. hybrids a couple of days to fully reflex but, this is not a cyc. hybrid. Maybe wind gusts of 20 to 30 miles all day had something to do with it. In any event, as Harold elaborated above, the photo as viewed yesterday, would probably qualify as a division  six. It had fairly good reflex and one bloom per stem. If it had multiple blooms, it probably would go in division 12, as you mentioned. Although, the cyclamineus species normally has one bloom per stem, it can have two, though very rare.

  8. These are nice flowers from very interesting crosses. (Dear Me x  fernandesii) x (Evenlode x  viridiflorus) is perhaps a tetraploid (NNFV) with two chromosome sets N of the standard daffodils , one of fernandesii (F), and one of viridiflorus (V). Then it should be fertile. I think the ‘Dear Me x fernandesii’ cross generated NF egg cells. Do you have a picture of it ,Larry, and what about the pollen fertility?

    The NVC 1  may be NNNV. It already flowered in my greenhouse and has a pollen fertility of about 10 %.

  9. Theo, The Dear Me x fernandesii seedling is from the same cross that produced Sighing and Endear, Rod Barwick  sent it to me as a bonus seedling. All three are fertile as I have crossed Sighing and Endear with both Pink China and Brooke Ager and got seed.  Don’t think I have a photo of the seedling but it is very much like Sighing and Endear with less color in the corona. Actually the seedling has grown and multiplied better for me than the named ones. Not sure about pollen fertility.  Don’t see where I have used the pollen of any of them in crosses, if I did, apparently no seed was produced. Will try the pollen this spring, would like to know myself. Thanks for your interesting comments on the fertility.
