New miniature seedlings.

Quite a lot of new seedlings are now in flower or have buds coming. The flowers are too early for our shows although I am trying to refrigerate them. But the Livermore show is still three weeks away. Our weather has not helped much. Temperatures have climbed to the high 80s and even low 90s. Not normal for this time of the year. Also it looks as if the much touted El Nino has passed us by. Enough of the sob story here are some pictures.

‘Tamar Fire’ is an intermediate double and I had hoped it would be the gateway for a lot of miniature seedlings. However, I only once ever had a flower with a stigma and I pollinated it with one of Bob Spott’s miniature jonquilla hybrids, a sibling of Spott’s ‘Ho Ho Kam’. It yielded only two seeds. Both have flowered now. One is a single 2W-Y though miniature but the other is an attractive double.

Here is a new little double from ‘Glowing Red’ x N. dubius. The fresh flower has some pale yellow coronal segments so I suppose it should be a 4W-Y, but it may turn into a 4W-W with age.

‘Arrowhead’ is a 6Y-R and here it was mated with N. lusitanicus. It gives very smooth little flowers.  A cross between a division 6 and a division 5 flower, I am not sure how to register it. I hate to put it into division 12. Any suggestions?

  1. Very nice little flowers, Harold.  If the 09-026-1 always comes with one bloom to a stem, I’d register it as a Div. 6.  Nice reflex to the flowers.

  2. The cup on 09-026-1 is narrow at the base – much like many Div. 5 cultivars. You might consider Div.5.

  3. I love the doubles. I agree with Bob this time. The seedling looks like a 5 to me.

  4. Loved the pictures.

I’ll swap you my 7 degree “F” nights, snow and ice on the ground for some of your California sunshine!

  5. I’d like to see it registered as a Div 5 — there aren’t very many 5s which are vivid yellow, unlike the cycs, and it looks like a 5 to me anyway.
