RIP

STETTINIUS, Joseph, of Charlottesville, Va., died on January 16, 2016, after a lengthy illness. He was 82. Joe was born in New York, N.Y. on March 4, 1933 to Virginia Wallace Stettinius and Edward R. Stettinius Jr. He is survived by his wife, Stewart Gamage; five children, Edward R. Stettinius (Sarah), Joseph Stettinius Jr. (Regina) and Virginia Stettinius McMullan (Michael), all of Washington, D.C., Mary Stettinius Benevento (Frank) of New Canaan, Conn., Carolyn Stettinius Rankin (John) of Atlanta, Ga.; and two stepsons, Graves Tompkins (Colleen) of New York, N.Y. and Forbes Tompkins of Alexandria, Va. He is also survived by his twin brother, Wallace Stettinius; and sister-in-law, Mary Gray Stettinius of Richmond, Va. He was predeceased by his parents and older brother, Edward R. Stettinius III of Middleburg, Va. In addition, he is survived by his grandchildren, Isabel S. Stettinius, Alexander T. Stettinius, Edward R Stettinius Jr, Lucy H. Stettinius, Anna McMullan and Catherine McMullan all of Washington, D.C., Anthony A. Benevento and Francesca B. Benevento of New Canaan, Conn., Grace Rankin and John Rankin of Atlanta, Ga., Brooks and Walker Tompkins of New York, N.Y., two former wives, Mary Ballou Williams of Richmond, Va. and Carolyn Faison of Charlotte, N.C.; and a large extended family. Joe attended Beauvoir School, St. Alban’s School, Woodberry Forest School and the University of Virginia, where he was a member of Saint Anthony Hall. He was a real estate developer with projects in Virginia and Bermuda. He was an active member of his church and served his community on several boards. Joe was known for his generosity, his loyal friendship, his mischievous sense of humor and his deep love for his family and friends. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held at Grace & Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 8 N. Laurel St., Richmond, Va. 23220, on Wednesday, January 20, at 3 p.m., followed by a reception at the church.
