Our Central area daff season has always been running a little behind ” normal ” and since our late show , – first weekend in October , quite a few very attractive late flowers have opened .We have had our first few days with temps over 20 C and the flowers rushed out but have since slowed with a southerly front and just a little fresh snow .Not much left now but these were appealing .
SHINDIG 2Y – YYR – A charmer from Brian Duncan . These rimmed flowers are always popular .The Irish brigade have been late this season – not enough really chilling winter weather . We did not have a CAPE POINT at our late show but they have since charged out . I still have BURNING BUSH to flower .
GLENFORD 2W – YYR – Colin Crotty . A personal favourite . Very clean colours , strong plant habits and giving some very bright seedlings .
FLASH IN THE PAN – 3Y – O – – Reg Cull — A useful late from Reg , tall stemmed and attractive softer colours .
EMMY LOU 9W – OR – Max Hamilton . Flower from John Hollevers patch but was also seen at our late show . The bright eye is very distinctive but all characteristics are poeticus . Several at show drew a lot of attention and are very eye catching .
COSMIC DAWN – 4W – WYR – John Hunter . A stunning late double , in the Hollever patch . Very clean colours and great form. Rather late for both National shows .
FIERY PEAK – 2W – GPR – Colin Crotty . One of the new red / pinks from Pleasant Valley Daffodils . Strong plant habits ,clean perianth and interesting colour changes in the cup as it matures .
A pair of double seedlings from the cross TANSEY GIRL – X – WALDORF ASTORIA .From two late flowers , I guess the seedlings would be late . Both first flowers with fair form .Interesting petaloid colours , just a little lighter than T G but also showing the lighter colour on the outer edge . Both parents have strong stems and so do these .One excellent neck and one O K neck . Definitely worth pegging .
Loverly flowers, John — and so late! So much color for so late, too.
Wow! If you see John Hunter, tell him Cosmic Dawn caused quite a stir on Daffnet. (Ok, So I’m the only one stirring in public so far, but I bet a lot of readers are writing it down on their wishlists!) Emmy Lou has to be written down too. I wish he had included the seedling number in his registration. There are a lot of Max Hamilton poet seedlings floating around up here, and I fear some will be double-booked on registration.
I noticed that Shindig is on our “Is it an Intermediate? List”. I grew it years ago – but I do not remember it being that small. You’re not finding it to be *that* small down there, are you?
