The Rongotea Spring Show , held on a fine Thursday , 15 September , had a good muster of local growers and Waikato grower Malcolm Lind , down for a few days to his former home territory . Judge Wayne Hughes faced about 300 stems. The amateur , novice and children’s classes are always strong here ; we were approaching mid season and after a good week weather wise , the full range of divisions were on display with blooms generally of good size and condition .
CHAMPION BLOOM JFM sdlg 14 – 21 , 2Y – R , — 06- 74 [( Loch Lundie x { Red Ember x Laphroaig }) – x – Rheban Red – John Mclennan . A big flower , tall stem , good stance , – showing Rheban influence .Thanks Malcolm Lind for show photo .
Reserve Champion – FLASHDANCE – 3Y – YO , Reg & Rita Cull .Sorry no photo of Rongotea bloom ; Flashdance show is 2015 Titahi Bay Champ from Peter Tijsen , not posted before .It is a very useful , early smallcup from John Hunter ; frequently in contention at early season shows .A big , well grown bloom with bright colours .
Premier 1Y – Y , SULPHUR MONARCH – John McLennan .Always a good early season trumpet .
Premier 1Y – O UNCLE DUNCAN , – Reg & Rita Cull , — Good colour and size in this oldie .
Premier 2Y – Y A Jenkins Sdlg , AJ 09-1A , Malcolm Lind . Very regular and balanced cup, good colour .Andrew has a some good seedlings that are performing well for several growers .
Premier 2Y – W , – TWILIGHT BEAUTY , – Reg & Rita Cull , – Sorry for poor photo – this is a classy reverse bicolour , — in contention for the top spots .
Premier Div 4 – BALLISTIC , – John Mclennan , Good colour and form , late this season .
Premier Div 6 , – TRENA , – Elsa Stern , – Our Central Group Patron is still growing some fine flowers, particularly in the lower divisions .
Premier Historic , 1Y – Y , ROYALIST 1914 , — Reg & Rita Cull . This was an exceptional Flower , possibly the best historic I have seen . I have heard and read a lot of the significance of ROYALIST in the breeding of yellow trumpets ; this was the first flower I had seen .That it was registered over a century ago is astounding ; sitting so flat , very smooth , not the roundness expected today but still an impressive bloom .
Was this how it looked in photos from a 1920’s catalogue , at a very high price in that era . Probably , but a click on the black & white button in the Adobe Lightroom program is all that I did .
Premier Miniature & Best Vase , – Bulbicodium conspicuous , Elsa Stern , – a very neat and attractive vase that certainly contrasts the range of forms in our daffodils .
Premier Amateur & Best Intermediate , ESKEDOS , – Malcolm Lind , – very bright and neat , – Malcolm bought down some very presentable flowers .
Premier Novice , — KIWI SUNSET , – Dara Robbie . A well grown , bright flower .
Premier Childrens , – Unknown 2Y – Y , – Kendall Marshall , a good winner from a competitive children’s class .
A very good midweek show ; thanks to Malcolm Lind and Wilfred Hall for photos and help with results as I had to leave soon after judging finished .
Ballistic – Twilight Beauty. Ballistic – Twilight Beauty. Ballistic – Twilight Beauty. Ballistic – Twilight Beauty.
