Mary Poppins makes early appearance

Its Late January in Fayetteville, Ga., USA we had a few 70 degree days. A new bulbicodium Mary Poppins made a unexpected very early appearance. I welcome the early spring like conditions but I know winter is just playing dead & could show back up at any time.

  1. Janet, that’s what I love about bulbocodiums–they can bloom unexpectedly!  I had ‘Galligaskins’ (10 Y-Y, Glenbrook Bulb Farm, Australia) in bloom here on January 21.  I’d rather have some early blooms and then winter returns than not have the early blooms.  It looks like I’ll have several varieties of early standards and some miniatures in bloom this week!

  2. That looks like entries for Sacremento Becky. Sometimes the early flowers have their day in the sun.

  3. With the near 70 degree F temperatures again today I doubt they’ll last for Sacramento, but unless we have an ice storm between now and then, I should have blooms to take. There are a good many daffs in tall bud about to open but they are the very early bloomers. The large circular bed I finished planting recently might make it a nice long season for me — one benefit of getting a slow start on planting. ;->
