LA- MISS Daffodil Society

The LA-MISS Daffodil Society is now a reality.  Our first show Saturday, March 4, was a great success on all levels.  Sixteen attended the Friday night dinner for out of state guests at a local restaurant.  Washington, LA, proved to be a welcoming historic community, highly suitable for this event.  Although a long drive for some, the graciousness of the Washington Garden Club more than compensated.

There were 325 stems from 19 competitors entered, and all divisions were represented.  A special thanks goes to Janet Loyd of Georgia who brought magnificent flowers, including a collection of division 10s, richly colors pinks, and miniatures.  She took home the silver ribbon.  Southern Region rock star Char Roush brought flowers from her extensive Arkansas plantings, including division 3s and 11s.  Janet won the mini gold from a table she dominated.  Ted Snazelle won the gold for a perfect stem of Fencourt Jewel.  In fact, the runner up stems for the gold were all Ted’s flowers! Perhaps the most interesting stem entered was the best intermediate, also Ted’s.  This glorious seedling was from a cross of Pink China x N. dubius.   The cup was perfectly shaped and strongly colored,  and the perianth pleasingly flat.  This stem would have won in any show!  Let’s hope that he registers this flower.

Hard working and enthusiastic Linda Chance won first for the best three stems of a historic with Klondyke.  Loyce was overheard saying that it was the finest Klondyke she had ever seen.  Ted staged many impressive sets of three, but his own seedling tazettas descended from Bright Spangles simply glowed with saturated color. How proud we are for the contributions of the stalwart members of the CMDS for helping this combined society become a reality, and for their participation.  Garden tours of the Kahn property were given after the show.

The Washington Garden Club provided a lovely luncheon, snacks, and the use of the club house, a former rectory adjacent to a historic church from 1870.  The rectory was fully decorated with all things daffodil, from quilts to vases and books.  Club gardens were recently renovated and available for viewing.  Three new ADS members, having never attended a show, were seriously smitten and awed.  Rumor is that one cottage has already been reserved for the first weekend in March, 2018!

  1. Sounds like you’re off to a great start!  Great to hear it, and it’s nice that you had good out-of-town participation.  And what a great idea to have the rectory decorated with all things daffodil.  As I said, sounds like you’re off to a great start!
