Some Miniatures at the Cincinnati 2017 Fall Daffodil Show

The fall 2017 American Daffodil Society board meeting added a daffodil show. The show date was November 11, 2017, and the location was the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Blue Ash, Ohio near Cincinnati. The most striking exhibits were the miniatures that Harold Koopowitz entered. I didn’t bring my camera, tripod, and lights, but here are some pictures taken with just a smart phone. I didn’t write down any of the flower names, but some of the labels are readable in the photos. Remember that most daffodils bloom in the spring so it’s unusual to have so many in bloom in the fall much less to transport them from Southern California to Ohio.

The flower that drew the most notice was the split corona in the front row of the Premier Miniature Award winner. Harold says the stripe in the perianth segments is stable and is passed through the seed parent.

  1. Kirby! Thank you! I didn’t see you taking pictures! I have the seedling numbers, thanks to Jolene McLaughlin who had them in my inbox before I even left the hotel for home, if you’d like them.

Folks, These were so amazing. Truly astonishing for many reasons, but because last year Harold exhibited so many viridiflorous hybrids and the show was the same date, more or less, I was completely taken by surprise! His green flowers were replaced by a bevy of beauties — 8W-Os!  How can that be?

The other cute thing, and why I didn’t get a photo of this, I do not know, any little vases we had were too big for his tiny flowers. Not the exhibition tubes, those were fine, but just vases for holding them in water while they waited for their beauty treatments. Harold had the ingenious idea to use a hotel glass from his sink which came covered with a heavy paper lid. He poked little baby holes in the lid and there it was, instant vase for about 15 flowers. He had three of them because he had a Premier (officially now the Koopowitz Ribbon – Yay ADS!) of 24 and a Watrous of 12. Considering that I was advised from the beginning that a Watrous wasn’t worth putting in the show schedule because no one could possibly stage one in Fall, it is truly astonishing that Harold could get a Watrous AND a Premier in one single show. And the flowers were all different. True individuals.  Dang! I just wish they would grow here!

I keep saying Harold, but I should really say, K-H-H, credit where credit is due and all. Harold Koopowitz, Steve Hampson and Marilynn Howe. Well, two big collections, several smaller collections, some singles and a standard — the man couldn’t do it all by himself!  (You should have seen the Californians in the 45 degree room.  It looked like one was going to rob a bank and two were going skiing!)

Any New Zealanders should also have seen Mitch and Kate Carney exhibiting the flowers they were in the process of turning around. The exhibiting was just normal, but I know from experience (bad experience, but experience all the same) Mitch had to be working for the past three months to make it happen.

Thank you both, and to the other exhibitors, all southerners, because the weather up here didn’t cooperate: Past President Jaydee Ager, Past President Becky Fox Matthews, and current Secretary Janet Hickman, who made it happen. It doesn’t happen on its own! And the fall season makes it especially difficult.

    They were beautiful!

    Suzy
