Autumn Colors x Constantinople

Here on the immediate coast, and hence lacking a truly hot summer baking, Constantinople tends to not be as fully double as it should be, having the doubling generally confined to the region of the corona, while this new seedling, pictured here, is more like Constantinople would appear, if it had adequate summer baking. So it appears this seedling needs less baking than it’s parent, to come as fully double this. Main virtue so far, the abundance of powdery pollen.

    Do you have any thoughts on the ploidy of this seedling – diploid, triploid? Do you have information on the proportion of doubles you get from a cross like this?

    Are you making any progress with Golden Rain seedlings? I recall you were getting too much doubling. Any thoughts as to why Constantinople might be a better parent?

Hard to say yet for sure on the ploidy, because the pollen is so much more powdery and abundant, but I’m still gonna guess triploid since tazetta triploids commonly do have such nice pollen and the overall plant so closely resembles Constantinople. And the flower is basically like that of Constantinople when it has had more baking that it normally gets here and hence comes more fully double. Initially I thought it was more of the Double Chinese type of doubling but as further buds have opened on the stem I would say no, its doubling is like the parent.

    I only have this one from that ancestry so far so don’t know how others would turn out.

    Haven’t made crosses using Golden Rain or Erlicheer pollens in recent years due to any doubles usually being so fully double that they just come out green and deformed. Once in awhile I will pick one just to have on hand at the farmer’s market for that luckily only very occasional customer who asks if I have any that don’t smell. I will grab the scentless green deformity and say “Oh I saved this one just for you”. Always good for a laugh!
