The 2019 Murphys show on March 9 & 10 was hosted by Ironstone Vineyards (who also hosted the 2010 ADS national show). With cold weather delaying bloom time, and rain, wind, and (in some areas) hail battering the flowers, the show was a little smaller than in previous years, but it was still a respectable show. Fourteen exhibitors put in 257 exhibits with a total of 560 blooms. In this post we show the standard daffodils that won ADS awards. If an award is not mentioned, it means it was not awarded. So there they are in the order they’re listed in the show report.
Gold Ribbon Winner
The Gold Ribbon is for the best standard daffodil in the show excluding the Container-Grown Section. The flower is ‘Goldhanger’ 2Y-Y exhibited by Kirby Fong.
Rose Ribbon Winner
The Rose Ribbon is for the best standard seedling in the show excluding the Container-Grown Section. The winner is seedling 3-40-19 7YWW-Y exhibited by Bob Spotts.
White Ribbon Winner
The White Ribbon is for the best set of three standard daffodils in the show. The winner is seedling3-33-19 exhibited by Bob Spotts.
Best Intermediate Ribbon Winner
Best Intermediate Three-Stem Ribbon Winner
The Best Intermediate Three-Stem set is usually found in the standard 3-stem section, but at a regional show such as this, it might be found in the Tuggle collection. The winner happened to be in the standard 3-stem section. It’s ‘Chile Verde’ 3Y-GYO exhibited by Bob Spotts. The best intermediate bloom is found by searching the Intermediates Section and standard collections. In this show, the best intermediate happened to be the middle flower in the best set of three intermediates. (An intermediate daffodil is a standard cultivar in Division 1, 2, 3, 4, or 11 having a single floret with perianth typically greater than 50 mm and up to 80 mm.)
Historic Bloom Ribbon Winner
The best bloom in the Historic Section was ‘Avalanche’ 8W-Y (1906) exhibited by Rosemary Scholz. (An historic daffodil is a cultivar introduced or in gardens before 1940.)
Historic Best Set of Three Ribbon Winner
The best set of three in the Historic Section was ‘Beryl’ 6W-YYO (1907) exhibited by Kirby Fong.
Best Classic Ribbon and Best Classic Single-Stem Ribbon Winner
The Classics Section has an award for the best bloom in the Section and an award for the best single-stem exhibit in the section. In this case, one exhibit won both awards. The flower is ‘Horn of Plenty’ 5W-W (1947) exhibited by Jon Kawaguchi. (A classic daffodil is a cultivar introduced between 1940 and 1969 inclusive.)
Best Classic Three-Stem Ribbon Winner
The best set of three in the Classics Section was ‘Golden Dawn’ 8Y-O (1958) exhibited by Mary Roach.
Small Growers Ribbon Winner
The Small Growers Section is reserved for exhibitors who grow 50 or fewer different cultivars and/or species. The best bloom in this section was ‘Falconet’ 8Y-R exhibited by Albert Elings.
Standard Container-Grown Ribbon Winner
The best exhibit of standards in the Container-Grown Section was ‘Monal’ 2Y-R exhibited by Steve Hampson. If this looks familiar to you, it’s the same exhibit that won this award at the Livermore show the week before. Steve did not go to the Murphys show (nor take this exhibit home after the Livermore show), so we brought it to the Murphys show and entered it on his behalf.
Red-White-Blue Ribbon Winner
The Red-White-Blue Ribbon is for the best collection of 5 different American-bred standards. Flowers in the winning exhibit are

The exhibitor was Steve Hampson. As mentioned previously, Steve did not attend the Murphys show. Bob Spotts saved the best flowers from Steve’s exhibits at the Livermore show and brought them to Murphys where we were able to assemble this Bozievich collection from Steve’s flowers.
Tuggle Award Winner
The Tuggle collection class exists at regional and national shows, and Murphys was the Pacific regional show this year. The class calls for three stems each of twelve different cultivars from at least three RHS Divisions. The flowers in the winning exhibit are
