ADS Summer Bulb Auction

Dear Daffodil Friends,

This summer the American Daffodil Society is sponsoring an ADS Summer Bulb Auction!

Many of our daffodil friends may be unable to attend our annual Spring Convention or Fall Forum. One of the lively and greatly anticipated events, at each of our annually sponsored events, is our Live Bulb Auction. We hope an ADS Summer Bulb Auction will generate as much interest and turn into an annual event.

Our first Summer Bulb Auction is primarily composed of daffodil bulbs from my own nursery. Sara Kinne has also graciously donated some wonderful cultivars too. We do have another generous member who is also planning to contribute, but we will announce those surprise donations as we near closer to the auction. We tried very hard to not include any cultivar currently being offered by our advertisers. There may be some I missed for which I offer my apologies.

I chose to use the public auction site of eBay.com (https://www.ebay.com). We want to reach-out to all daffodil enthusiasts across the Internet as well as the fact most that use the Internet have at one time or another visited eBay and are familiar with how the site works. PLEASE NOTE: International shipping is not setup on eBay for this Bulb Auction. So we are not able to ship daffodil bulbs outside of the USA at this time. The auction will run from Thursday August 15 until Sunday August 25.

All bulbs are titled this way on eBay: ADS Summer Bulb Auction – cultivar name the list of cultivars being offered are at the bottom of this notice. Typing in and using the sites search option should take you directly to the cultivar you wish to bid on . . . please bid often.

This first auction will be small. If it is successful and you feel we should offer it again, please let me or your Regional VP, your local club members or anyone who will listen to you about your thoughts from this auction. Your support is important for the continuance of the auction.

Please click on each cultivar name within the CURRENT LIST OF BULB AUCTION DAFFODIL CULTIVARS for more details about the bulbs we will be offering.

Remember: Bidding begins August 15 at 12 AM

Sincerely,
Frank Nyikos

  1. Hi all
While making my breakfast pancake I thought I would make sure the auction was live. It is!

Being lazy I only typed in “ADS Summer Bulb” in the search field on the eBay homepage. The search brought up all 29 bulbs!

Bid early, often and convince a friend to bid on those you may already have but feel they should have in their garden

  2. Good morning
We’re off to a ROARING start to the first ever ADS Summer Daffodil Online Auction. Thank you for your support. It appears as though each of the 29 cultivars have at least 1 bid. Top bid right now and the one with the most activity is White Owl 12w-w which is a Historic. It has been a good grower for me in South Central Indiana.

I have heard a few comments, ideas as well as questions. . . keep them coming. We would like to make this an annual event. Each opinion matters!

The most common question is the size of the bulbs. Please know that most of these selections came from my own garden. Some came from Sara Kinne who lives nearby. We tried to include a nice double nose and an offset at the least. This is consistent with what one would receive from any good nursery. While my bulbs aren’t the force fed mammoth bulbs one expects from some specialty nurseries, I have been told repeatedly that my bulbs are of very good size. We tried to make them so one can expect (hopefully of course) a couple of stems that will bloom in the spring.

There have been comments about how I worded the auction. This can be improved next year. For now just go to ADS Summer Bulb Auction This will take you directly to a page where all 29 are listed. One can also to eBay’s home page at eBay then in the search line type in ADS Summer Bulb and it will take you to all 29. It’s helpful to type more than just ADS Summer as you will get other items with the word “summer” in the item link.

Keep you comments coming to me. Keep up the bidding! Thank you
    frank

  3. Good morning

The auction is going well. As of this morning White Owl 12w-w is still in the lead at $54!

This seems to be generating a lot of interest. I’m hearing many ideas for improvements too. Please keep them coming. This could be an annual event. So, any way to make it better is welcome. I hope to post a report so Lynn can put it up shortly after I mail the bulbs. I plan to mail after Labor Day.

The auction is open until Sunday midnight. . . if I set this up correctly which I think I did. As most of you know there is plenty of action the closer to the end of an auction. I expect quite a bit of activity this weekend. Be sure to up your bid and help the American Daffodil Society.

  4. Hi all

It appears as though the auction is ending at 3AM Sunday Eastern Time. I thought it would be open until midnight Sunday. So, this looks like we are nearing the end. There’s still time to bid.

As of 11 AM Saturday I see that White Owl 12w-w is still high bid at $107.50!

This has been an exciting new venture for the American Daffodil Society. I hope all of you are enjoying this. I will be mailing winning bids their bulbs after Labor Day. I want to avoid mailing to those who will be out of town for the holiday.

I plan to post a report to the Board of Directors shortly after mailing the bulbs. I want to include postage details in the report. I’m more than happy to send the report to any not on the Board. Just send me your email and I’ll include you. I will include all the observations I’ve received too.

    Bid often! and soon
    frank

  5. Goodness, I think I will put White Owl in my catalogue. I bought some at the garden centre this year for $1.50 per bulb.
