The Otaki Horticultural Society held our Daffodil Show on Friday 6 September .A cool overcast day , some strong winds locally early in the week ,but 16 exhibitors arrived to stage an impressive 312 stems , – 52 vases of 3 and 156 singles . A warm and wet winter gave good early growth , – the result was good flower size , tall stems and most blooms in good condition .It was pleasing to see some new faces exhibiting in the Garden and Middle section , – good full classes and some close judging calls . We missed regular judge Wayne Hughes but sorted them all with good panel judging .Veteran growers Reg & Rita Cull from Foxton , 25 miles north , – continued their winning start to the season but the large number of quality premiers were well spread around the area .
Champion Bloom went to Reg and Rita with CHAMPEEN , 2W – Y , a Phillips flower that they grow well and have had top blooms with regularly .They also took Reserve Champ and a host of well grown and staged premiers .

I was not using my old Fuji camera ; a newer Sony , – the reds come out very bright and I had to tone most down a few shades .I use this one mostly for my bird photography as it is 50 x zoom , but I soon realised that those beaks are not that red .Quite surprising the difference between two well known makes . Some may still be a little red .
Lovely flowers. Thank you John for posting this.
I was especially taken by Gipsy Class. Perianth has great form for an 11.

Who is the breeder on the 5 W-Y ‘Mission Bells’? I only know the 5 W-W Mitsch flower.
Mary Lou
Definitely not Mission Bells nor Ice Chimes, I dont recognize the triandrus hybrid at all
Thanks all for the comments and interest .Yes Naomi , Colin Crotty and Pleasant Valley have given us some fine split corona flowers ; Gipsy Class ( different spelling ) is one of their best . A must for all Kiwi exhibitors ; frequently on the premier table .
Diane Irwin is growing most of her daffodils in pots these days . A new range of varieties suitable for a town section , not the acres they had a few years back .Easy to pick from a pot and get the wrong name .
The Premier Div 5 is LAPWINGS .
Cheers John
What a wonderful review. Thanks John. I have checked Daffseek and the Div 5 is certainly Lapwing.
