In review of the 2019 Local Show results I noticed a lack of reports on large collections.  I don’t know if that is just this year 2019 or if they were left out on purpose.  They are:

Quinn

Throckmorton,

Bozievich

Havens.

The was one Quinn reported for Gloucester Va.  I noticed that the Silver Ribbon award was posted religiously.

I will admit that with me moving to NJ from NC that I showed very lightly in 2019. I have won my share of Silver Ribbons awards but it was always won along with major awards, ie., Quinn,  Throckmorton, Bozievich, Havens or Purple Ribbon.  In my showing I always had Karen Cogar or Janet Hickman as my competition on the Quinn, Bozievich or whatever large collection.  I’m just hoping this was an off year for large awards.  I’m warning now, 2020 will have large collections at the shows that I attend because I will enter them.  I believe in entering the large collections and letting the new showers and those with smaller collections of daffodils have the singles and small collections.  I put my daffodils in the large collections first, go for the best collection of 5 in the show next, Red white and blue (with my own seedlings) next than anything left I put in the three of a kind or single stems.  So my bad daffodils will be competing with the smaller growers at the singles and three of a kind level.

Anyway, my two cents.

    Hey Clay,

Only selected awards are included in the report for the Journal due to space. I believe he only mentions medals if they are first time winners. Complete show results are available in Dafflibrary though. We usually put a notice in to that effect and forgot to in this issue. Sorry about that.

Some people only enter classes that they can win, others only enter their favourite classes. Some only enter those quality flowers that they have on the day, others enter everything regardless of quality in order to give competition and to make a display for the public to see. If we were all like those in the first three options then there would only be 150 entries in a show. Quality v quantity.

Mary Lou has added the individual show reports for the 2019 shows (except Pittsburgh) to DaffLibrary.  I’m relieved to say that we’ve finally produced the combined show reports as a large Excel spreadsheet (or its PDF equivalent) not only for 2019 but for 2018 as well, and both have recently been added to DaffLibrary.  Pittsburgh did not send a report for its 2019 show, so after protracted efforts to get it, we went ahead to produce the combined report without their results. So you can now read about all the large collections in all the daffodils shows (except Pittsburgh) in 2018 and 2019.

    David,

I only show the daffodils I have in bloom at a given show. However, at some shows I show up with 300 daffodils. I start with the largest collections and work my way down until I either run out of time or daffodils. Many a time I have 50 -100 daffodils left over when time runs out. Sometimes I just can’t figure out where in the show to put them. I don’t worry about whether I can win a class or not, I put my flowers in and expect them to win. They don’t always.

    Jolene,

That seems to encourage the single stem winners. I think a broader spectrum should be entered in the Journal. There were no miniature larger collections also. I do appreciate the complete show results that are available in the Dafflibrary.

If you need help typing them, ADS has never asked me to help, except for a couple times that Mary Lou has asked me to participate in an ADS function. Just ask. I’m a good touch typist and am willing to help, just never asked.

    Thanks Kirby,

I will look at the DaffLibrary. I do enjoy the show reports.
