Dallas Auction 2020

Hi All

I’ve copied a list of the auction items Janet will be taking bids for in Dallas. I’m sorry the formatting is horrible. We will try and post this on our website in the future so you can view this better. Because I’m copying and pasting there may be some problems. Please double check with someone who has a hard copy or ask me at title=

May I suggest that if you are NOT attending the convention and you see something interesting that you make arrangements with someone who will be going to place a bid for you? Some of these items are quite rare and very desirable. Please work with someone attending convention to act as your broker. We had 2 people who set up a phone arrangement with someone in Lynchburg to place bids for them. . . . AND they were the winning bidder!

I would like to point out that there are 2 pieces of artwork. One by our own Ian Tyler. I have one of his pencil drawings and it is quite lovely. The other is by Nancy Maxwell of Martinsville, IN. I have seen some of her work before and all are living room quality attractive.

Please use https://daffseek.org/ to view images of Daffodils. Janet will be quite busy but we will try and get images to post when we are able of those things you may find an interest in.

ADS Auction – Spring 2020

Note to Bidders:
The American Daffodil Society (ADS) Bulb Auctions are supported by many of the leading hybridizers around the world. Their generous donations make this auction possible. In order to ensure continued donations of their newest and best creations, the ADS asks that buyers hold bulbs purchased in their garden and NOT release, trade, donate, sell, or distribute any bulb from this auction for a period of five years. Bidding for bulbs and plants is only open to ADS members who reside in the continental United States. We thank you for your generous participation and appreciate your respect for the bulb growers’ economic concerns.

‘Little Yoshiko’ – 6 Y-Y (Graham Fleming, Australia) NR2018 This is a micro-mini.

Donated by Diane Cockerham, USA Painting (pick up here)

“Forever Daffodils” Diane explains that this is done by the artist Nancy Maxwell of Martinsville, IN, who was interested in painting Helen Link’s daffodils at the Link Observatory fields in Mooresville, Indiana. Nancy met the Link’s through a mutual friend and recalls an earlier time spent with them among the daffodils, having lemonade. She started the oil painting in the Helen Link daffodil fields, ( plein air ) and then finished it in the studio. The artist is donating the painting through Diane to the ADS auction. The painting is ~27.5 inches tall by ~33.5 inches wide and is framed.
Helen Link was a founder of IDS and a charter member of ADS, who served as ADS President (1984-86), three separate terms as Director-at-Large, as well as on committees, and was awarded the silver and gold metals. Not only a successful exhibitor, she was an internationally known hybridizer of more than 50 registered cultivars along with unregistered seedlings and taught judging schools throughout the Midwest. In the March 2003 issue of ”The Daffodil Journal”, her assistant in later years, Joe Hamm, eulogized Helen as a “Renaissance woman who studied the breadth of daffodil horticulture, could be found anywhere on their 17 acres, even on a tractor, yet set a proper tea table”.

Donated by Dan Bellinger, USA (fall delivery)

‘Mary Rutledge’- 2 W-W (Daniel Bellinger) 2017 Mid-season (‘Ghost’ x ‘Denali’) Dan writes, “Mary Rutledge and her sister Libby Frey mentored me in my first decade or so growing daffodils. Mary was the leader of the Adena Daffodil Society in Chillicothe Ohio. As a seedling, ‘Mary Rutledge’ won both Rose Ribbon and Best-in-Show at the CODS show in Columbus, Ohio.” Fl. 93 mm wide, greenish white, perianth segments 40 mm long, broadly ovate, blunt, prominently mucronate, spreading, shallowly concave, with midrib showing, of heavy substance, overlapping half; inner segments narrower, less prominently mucronate; corona 33 mm long, cylindrical, smooth, mouth expanded, ribbed and wavy, with rim entire.

Donated by Larry Force, USA (late summer delivery)

‘Lima’s Green Road’ – 12 G-G (Manuel Lima) 2012 Fall or Autumn blooming (‘El Camino x N. viridiflorus) Fls 2 per stem, 67mm wide, star-shaped, facing down; perianth segments 33mm long, lanceolate in outline, blunt at apex, yellow-green, spreading, plane or with margins incurling, smooth and of membranaceous substance, separated; the inner segments narrower; corona 7mm long, cylindrical, ribbed, yellow-green, mouth straight and wavy, with rim notched. Strongly scented.
Larry says, “As the foliage is up during the winter it would not be good up north but grows and blooms well in the southeast. Should be perfect for the Dallas area. Usually blooms from Christmas to mid-January and has a very nice fragrance. Frank Galyon gave me one bulb once when I stopped by to visit him, as he thought it would be too cold for it in the Knoxville area. Not sure where he got his one bulb, maybe from Manuel. I have shared it with several people but is not offered by any commercial grower that I know of. It grows well in a pot, in fact the photo of it is in a pot. Of course, the pot would have to be protected in colder areas. Bulbs need to be kept dry during the summer if potted. Flowers are normally 2 I/2 inches in diameter, usually 2 blooms per stem. on tall stems 15 to 16 inches. Foliage is about the same. It multiplies well. 3 bulbs offered.

Mid-season Fl. 105mm long; perianth segments 42mm long, broadly ovate, blunt, brilliant yellow, spreading, plane, smooth and of heavy substance, overlapping half; the inner segments shouldered at base; corona 42mm long, cylindrical, lightly ribbed, strong yellowish pink, mouth straight and even, with rim notched and slightly flanged.

Name suggested after winning Rose Ribbon at 1st ADS Fall Show in Indianapolis.
Gary says, “‘Indy Fireworks’ is fall-blooming and very easy to grow indoors in a sunny window. As a seedling, it won a Rose Ribbon for the best seedling in the first ADS fall show.”

‘Straylight Run’- 2 WWY-Y (Gerard Knehans, Jr., USA) 2014 Mid-season Fl. forming a double triangle, 90mm wide; perianth segments broadly ovate, truncate, mucronate, white with yellow at base and at margins, spreading, plane or with margins a little incurved, smooth and of heavy substance, overlapping half; the inner segments narrower, shouldered at base, scarcely mucronate; corona funnel-shaped, yellow, mouth lightly frilled, with rim entire.
Gary says, “‘Starlight Run’ is quite striking and variable from opening bloom to peak bloom as photos of it demonstrate on Daffseek.”

Donated by Frank Nyikos, USA (delivery later)

Daylily ‘Anniversary Sunset’ (Frank Nyikos) 2019 (unknown x Sovereign Queen) tetraploid, 31 inches tall, Early Midseason, 7.5 inches, Semi Evergreen. It is light pink with lavender overtones with recurved petals and sepals with a huge yellow throat and a faint watermark. It has a long bloom time but doesn’t repeat.

Hosta ‘Northern Hemisphere’ (Frank Nyikos) 2019 A medium – small 13 inches tall and 30 inches wide. It has a mound like habit with medium dark green broadly ovate slightly rippled leaves with moderate corrugation. The underneath is slightly shiny. The flower scapes are 20-24 inches tall with very soft pink flowers blooming early to mid-July in Indiana. The parentage is ((H Benedict x H hypoleuca) x Teaspoon) x open . . . . . as I remember this was part of my research to determine where and how leaf serration was genetically produced. I couldn’t capture the soft pink flowers. The pictures all show white.

‘Coolattin’ – 2 W-Y (Carncairn Daffodils, N. Ireland) 1969 Early to Mid-season. ADS Classics Perianth segments white; corona yellow, with a slightly darker tone at rim and greenish gray tones in tube.
David describes this as, “an ADS Classic that is never offered named Coolattin blooms early-mid and could be valuable for those needing something to finish off a Classics collection at the beginning of their show season. I never offered it but have had a clump growing in the grass in front of our house for at least fifteen years. Picking early is recommended, and fortunately the clean white of the corona and the deep yellow of the cup exists upon opening. A number of daffodils the wonderful Kate Reade developed were named after special houses and manors in Ireland. Google Coolattin House and you will see the history of that estate. I tried to research the actual derivation of the name Coolattin, and found that the suffix –attin , derived from an ancient Irish language word, referred to the “furze” (a spiny plant, or swath of these plants, akin to or synonymous with gorse) that often occupies grazing lands in England and Ireland. Coolattin evidently refers to the corner of the furze.”

Donated by Dr. John Reed, USA (fall delivery)

Offered together for their historic interest and their prowess as parents of many other daffodils. Richard explains, “Each, at its introduction, was astounding for size, color and form. Definitely Game Changers. Before ‘Rockall’ 3W-R’s were cute but small. All of a sudden people didn’t want little old ‘Corofin’ anymore. Same thing happened earlier with ‘Chinese White’. Nobody was content with the lovely old-timer ‘Dallas’ after seeing the new thing. Both ‘Rockall’ and ‘Chinese White’ were immediately used, and continued to be for years, in breeding. Perhaps these two cultivars have never been topped in getting new lines started.(Take a look at their progeny in Daffseek.) And both are capable of winning in shows today, not only in classic or historic sections.

The rounded florets with the shallow saucer shaped coronas suggested the name nickel as in the coin, but Nickelodeon is also another name for a juke box.
