Need biochem advise

I need some advise from my chemical Savvy Daffodillians. I was alerted to a product(bonide Grass Beater II)from my Iris friends that is supposed to kill grass but leave other plants healthy. As I live in a state know for growing grass it is next to impossible to keep my beds clean. The biggest problem is Johnson grass which spreads by runner and seed. I’m glad the cows love it but it is the bane of my existence !
I would love to hear if anyone has used it successfully with no harm to their daffodils.

  1. Lisa,

Can’t help you on bio chemical advise. However, if you have Johnson Grass I’ve never heard of a cow eating it unless she was starving.  Johnson Grass was imported from Africa as a god-send to cattle, however, the elephants that ate it if Africa turned out not to be cows.  Johnson Grass turned into a invasive grass that is the bane of farmers and gardeners.

  2. I use Linuron, Basagran, and Roundup.

Linuron is first, before emergence. Leaves show chlorosis if emerging plants are sprayed, but it doesn’t hurt them (much).

Basagran can be used post-flowering, but it seems to take a toll on the plants.

Use Roundup after the leaves are gone to clear everything before the following spring, roots and all.

Mulch suppresses without herbicides, but must be managed.

Read labels. Grasses and clover are tough.

  3. Johnson grass is a problem in NZ too. I think glyphosate helps to control it. Nb I use raw glyphosate to avoid supporting Monsanto.
