Youth Challenge Bulb

Good morning
One of the unfortunate consequences of our current health pandemic is that our Youth will not have an opportunity to show their challenge bulb. We as adults have learned to accept disappointments beyond our control. Our young people have not nor should they be stoic with our advanced means of communication.

It was discussed briefly in Dallas that we can still encourage our Youth to share their challenge bulb growing and displaying skills electronically. We have much to discuss and to agree upon. Please contact Fredrica Lawlor title= directly or post your comments to this post for all to see. You’re also welcome to post to me privately and I will pass on your ideas in private title=

Please encourage any Youth you know to take both a garden image as well as one staged of their challenge bloom for Rapture 6y-y (Gloucester has 2 challenge cultivars and Margaret is aware of your special circumstance). Some in our southern locations may already have this in bloom. We hope you will save these images until or if we can make this happen.

It isn’t clear whether garden, display or both will be judged. And, because there is much to be decided and we all have our own special growing circumstances, we hope you will take images as you are able. Save the pictures until we know if we can support our Youth this way. Remember that our northern most Youth may not have bloom until May.

  1. Shouldn’t we encourage youth to photograph other cultivars as well?  Some may not have a good bloom of Rapture, but might have other blooms they would like to share.  I’d be happy to be one of the judges in a virtual daffodil show for youth.  Maybe have the entries divided into different age categories and having the opportunity to subdivide “classes” if we get enough entries.  We may even want a few categories like in the usual photography division such as “Daffodils and Animals”, “Daffodils and People” to encourage youth to get creative with their daffodils especially while some of them are out of school.

  2. Good idea Becky! ! !
My only concern is that it should be the Youth taking pictures.

  3. Yes, the “rules” should state that the youth is taking the photos and originally we were talking about them taking photos of the daffs they have grown themselves.  We could have a category for Youth photos of other people’s flowers as well.
