We are having a few warm nights this week and the early tazettas are moving quickly .
My first flower , a bloom of TAHI, flowered in very late March and they have grown quickly since then , although we could use a good rain .
The late Bill Welch , – Bill the bulb Baron , will always be in our thoughts at this time of the season , as almost all of my early stocks have
originated from seed sent to New Zealand by Bill .
TAHI , always the first to flower ; – thick , strong stems , very fragrant .
I am always trying a few early selections – the different heights show the selection blocks . BABY BLUE , small leafed eucalyptus shrubs , destined for the cut flower markets , on the left , TORU , another early tazetta , on the right .
The first TAHI , showing damage from the Pukeko birds , always very inquisitive at the start od the season ,snapping the stems and flowers .
They are attractive birds , nice to have around , but can be a nuisance . They had a real go at the row end by THEIR creek . .
We have no commercial , wholesale flower markets operating at the moment as we are in COVID 19 LOCKDOWN ..
I needed an exemption to travel from home to another garden block to plant my daffodil bulbs .
This has been granted , to all bulb growers , under legislation and the clause is –
EXEMPT SEASONAL CAPITAL STOCK MANAGEMENT . – went taken apart word by word , it actually makes sense .
Quite pleased , after 40 years doing the same job ,( still enjoyable ) , – to have a new tittle .
