Early White Doubles

The  2020  daffodil  season  is  moving  steadily  as  we  all  wonder  what  is  ahead .The  season  locally  with  standard  daffs  has  seen  volumes  increasing  steadily  for  about  a  month  ,  starting  mid  June  or  near  the  shortest  day .Yellow  trumpets  and  redcups  have  been  well  recieved  in  the  markets  as  the  market  floors  have  been  a  little  light –  no  imported  flowers  , –  but  they  are  now  starting  to  appear  again .I  noticed  Columbian  Roses  featuring  again , –  they  are  always  a  consistent  product .

Graham  Phillips  and  I  have  both  been  pursuing  early  doubles  for  the  cut  flower  market –  progress  is  slow  but  steady .It  is  still  early  season  here  but  we  have  been  sending  a  few  emails  back  and  forward  , –  always  with  photos  and  a   few  cheeky  comments .Here  are  a  few  of  the  current  flowers .

Graham  made  a  cross  in  2009 , cross  T=72 ,  from  which  he  made  7  selections   t=72  is  Shykowski (4w x w , David  Jackson )   – x – Colenso (1W = W ,  Max Hamilton) Seedling .       Colenso  is  very  white  and  has  a  very  short  neck  that  sometimes  keeps  the  head  down  a  little .    Here  are  a  few  from  this  cross .

 

 

 

 

 

T = 72 = 2  .  consistently  full  ,  opens  light  yellow  ,  matures  to  all  white .

 

 

 

 

T = 72 = 1   is  a  half  double  ,  frequently  has  a  pistil  and  will  set  seed .

 

 

T = 72 = 4    is  a  clean  2W – W  ,  good  form  ,  opens  clean  white .

 

 

 

 

 

 

From  the  very  early  yellow  petaled  double  , Early  Orbit  4Y – YO ,  as  a  pollen parent  ,  Graham  has  a  nice  4W – Y ,  that  fades  to  almost  white .The  seed  parent  is  another  seedling, –    I – 10 – 1 ,  Max  Ham  Early  Dailmanach  sdlg x Gee  Pink . Good  form  and  substance  on  this  fine  early  double .

I  have  also  used  Early  Orbit  , as  a  seed  parent  ,  with  a  white  petaled  pollen  parent  and  obtained  a  very  early  white  backed  double

 

 

JFM   10 – 6  ,    Early  Orbit   x    Reg  Cull  2W – P  Dear  Me  sdlg . Opens  with  creamy  center  ,  matures  to  almost  white .
