We’ll miss John Reed and Oakwood Daffodils

  Why It’s Called Oakwood

If you visited Oakwood Daffodils in Niles, Michigan during the season and asked Dr. John Reed, “What’s new?”, you would likely be treated to a ride in his golf cart and to a firehose of info about the crosses, colors, achievements, goals, and plans, all delivered too fast for you to take photos, write notes, or formulate intelligent queries about the blooms he chose from this field to show you. That was fun and somewhat daunting, and it’s very sad that it won’t happen again. John’s wife once told mine, “If you want to chat with John, be prepared to discuss either medicine or daffodils.” He was very good to the Midwest Daffodil Society and to anyone who showed interest in his favorite obsession. We and all who loved his passion and skills and who appreciated his generosity will miss him.

An excellent obit, with a photo of John and of the Peter Barr Trophy, is at: https://www.halbritterwickens.com/obituary/John-ReedDO
