Daffodils no longer bloom

Hi all

Here is a request for help from Linda Stone. She is looking for some advice. She tells me these are not planted in the shade. These are in areas with other Daffodils that bloom. Thanks for helping her.

Wondering if you might know why my daffodils have not bloomed for the last 4-5 years. They get buds but do not open. all the other daffodils in the neighborhood open. They are planted in three different locations in my yard. Any ideas what could be wrong?***

  1. My first thought is that it is a variety that does not do well in your area. What is the cultivar and where are you located? Here in middle TN some doubles and some tazettas “blast.” That’s when the buds don’t develop fully and the buds wither and turn brown. I’ve also had some of the Division 12’s with viridiflorus in them blast on occasion. It’s likely weather related, but I’m not sure anyone knows exactly what causes it to happen.

  2. Yes, please tell us what variety is not blooming, and where you live.  As Becky said, some doubles “blast.”  Here in Ohio, doubles are affected by the weather.  We get lots of up and down temperatures in the spring.  Just in the past week we’ve had temperatures with highs in the 40s or 50s, and then soaring to highs near 80 yesterday.  I noticed yesterday that buds on most doubles are not going to open.  A few have tried to open, but the blooms are distorted.  If this is happening to you every year, you might want to plant different varieties of daffodils.
