I paid a quick visit to Reg and Rita Cull as Reg had rung to say he had a nice bloom out of his first registration and it was not photographed on Daffseek..Over a nice coffee , Reg told an interesting story of his seldom seen 2 Y – Y ” Showtime ” . He took the first flower of this “Smooth Gold ” seedling to the 1967 North Island National show in Gisborne .To his delight it won Premier Seedling and pushed hard for higher honours . It was the first National that Reg had shown in the Open classes ; he had a very good show with Premier seedling and several collection class wins .I was impressed with my first sighting of this big , tall and very gold large cup that Reg registered the year after it,s Gisborne success ; it has also given him a few nice seedlings .
One of the last registrations from Max Hamilton was “”Whitford Sunset ” , – 1 W – O .. There are not many Kiwi flowers in this division and this smooth , well coloured orange trumpet is a very useful addition .It opens a little off – white and a little yellowish in the trumpet but very quickly the petals whiten and the trumpet tones to a rich orange , just a little lighter at the base .
I showed this pink large cup last season ; it is having a very good year this season and will be registered when I think of a suitable name . Sdlg J F M 10 – 18 opens with yellow tones but soon turns to a rich , deep pink , a little lighter at the base . A big flower on a strong , tall stem with a smooth white perianth .
Gorgeous flowers, John! Thanks so much for sharing those and the others you’ve posted! Thanks also to Robin Hill, Lawrence Trevanion, and Graham Fleming for posting daffs blooming in New Zealand and Australia! Keep the photos coming please. I love ‘Whitford Sunset’.
These are spectacular blooms, and it’s nice to see them. Greetings to Reg and Rita from California! We shared many good times and good conversations on the 2008 Kiwi World Convention Tour in Europe.
