A teaser

As it is all quiet on Daffnet, how about a little quiz.

Attached are three pictures of the same location. The title could be “It all started here”.

But Where?

By Whom?

And When?

Just one clue. It is within five miles of the Daffodil Show with the highest attendance in the world.

  1. Is is William Wordsworth’s home circa 1810 in Grasmere in England’s Lake Country?

  2. Rev Engleheart should be the right answer. Olivia beat me to it.

  3. Adele

You have got the right time period, which therefore rules out Engleheart, and Peter Ramsay correctly identified Harrogate as being in the right area. There were of course many men ‘of the cloth’ involved with daffodils in the early days. Keep trying.

  4. Hi James and all.

I have had Sherlock (alias Lesley) on the job. She has studied our maps of Yorkshire, helped by her experience as guide on our visits (when we got lost), and we have come up with the conclusion that it has to be the Rev William Herbert from Spofforth,

Are there prizes for all this!!!? Perhaps on our planned visit in 2014

    Peter and Lesley Ramsay

  5. Congratulations Lesley, it is Spofforth where William Herbert, known later as Dean Herbert lived from 1814 to 1840. There he made the cross between N. incomparabilis and N. poeticus. It is only because this cross worked, to give N. Spofferthii that we have the vast range of daffodils today.

I took the photographs yesterday at Spofforth when researching information for inclusion on the Northern Group website. The link to give you information on Herbert can be found below.

Now that the season is over we will be researching and adding more people to this section of the website Daffodil People from the Past. If anyone is interested in knowing more about any daffodil people not already included, then please let us know and we will do our best to add them. I might occasionally do a similar quiz while preparing the material.

Yes Peter there will be a prize but you will have to wait until 2014.

    Regards to all

  6. Hello All,

Thanks you James! We had a lot of fun working on this! Having looked up our trusty map we realized that we had been through Spofforth on our last visit to Yorkshire.  We were off to the horse races. at Wetherby. It was a glorious day and everyone was there to enjoy themselves. We certainly did – to our surprise there were three New Zealand bred horses running, All three won! So it was a profitable outing! But, sad to say, we did not realize (until now) that Spofforth had significance for daffodil growers

Quite a few shoots of daffs through here.  Much earlier than last year.

    Cheers’

    Peter and the detective!
