Another fine Jonquilla

John Hunter has flowered  many nice seedlings using pollen from his very fertile Emerald Sea.With a very limited pool of fertile jonquillas, a logical cross is with the very fertile Hillstar as a seed parent .Not quite as easy as it sounds as they flower , in our Kiwi season timing , usually about 6 – 8 weeks apart .John has made a lot of these crosses , with a high success rate , using stored frozen Emerald Sea pollen .Lawrence Trevanion has made similar crosses , with some attractive seedlings shown on his July  10 post .This cross is with J A H 47 – 88 C , a sister seedlng to Emerald Sea.

Hillstar - x - 47 - 88C , a sibling of Emerald Sea

Hillstar – x – 47 – 88C , a
sibling of Emerald Sea

John has commented that one of the most notable traits of this cross is the very high flower rate .Both single and multihead stems have resulted ; all have produced many stems per bulb , flowering over quite a period .

  1. Hi John,

Thanks so much for the post and photos. A lovely seedling set of John Hunter’s indeed! Wondered if you could give a rough idea of the range of stem and foliage height? Also general bloom diameter(s)?

I’m assuming these bloom in late winter/earliest spring. Do some of the progeny bloom in Season 1-2? Love to see photos when they come!!!

    Thanks! Really wonderful things.

    Steve
