Appreciation of the Journal Cover – more than one reason

Many thanks to Tom Stettner for the terrific photo and congratulations to Becky Fox Mathews for her Gold Ribbon at Lexington.

But my additional gratitude to both since my Lightning Fire won the Gold at the Midwest Daffodil Society show at the Chicago Botanic Garden. I had fretted because I had no photo to send to the Journal, but now I may hold up the Journal cover when boasting to my friends – including you. My bloom was one of a vase of three, and it was “just like Becky’s”. I did get a decent photo of all three of Frank Galyon’s gorgeous flower.

There was local drama, at least for two of us, in the selection of the Gold here. Nancy Pilipuf had a gorgeous entry of Lissome which won the White Ribbon. At the end, it was Lightning Fire vs. Lissome for the Gold, so Nancy and I recused ourselves across the room and watched the final deliberations, which seemed to go on forever. I have been second best to her entries many times, and this was only the second time I was able to get the Gold here.

I  took just about all the blooms from the awards table home and displayed some or all of them at my local Rotary Club breakfast, at my local garden club, at our Master Gardener telephone query room, and, of all places, at my weekly radio ham breakfast. We got the most possible mileage and lots of good will for daffodils from those blooms. The attached pics show them and a few others at the Rotary meeting and also on a table at my house where they were also enjoyed by Mary and me until we had to toss them, a bonus for being Show Chair. Most of these are from Nancy. Lissome and Lightning Fire are easily spotted.

  1. Congratulations, George!  I was pleased that a Tennessee-bred flower won the Gold in KY so this is really fun that it also won in IL.  I’ve tried to collect Frank Galyon’s flowers since, as far as I know, he is the only TN hybridizer with registered flowers.  Sabine Hay x Monal produced a very nice flower!
