Autumn 17#5

Bulbocodium season has now started.

The first of the viridiflorus hybrids has just finished which means it has lasted over 2 weeks.

A couple more viridiflorus hybrids are now flowering. 11_01MJ is probably Virivest x viridiflorus and is quite sterile. A new seedling 17_03MJ is Virivest crossed with an early jonquilla. It seems highly sterile.

Also lasting for ages is Bill Welch’s Autumn Colors/tetraploid.

Some of my favorite Autumn Colors x Soleil D’Or are flowering.

The hoped for 8O-O didn’t really eventuate.

And of course there are more elegans hybrids. The last of these, 17_30T, is quite small.

  1. Lawrence,

It’s quite disappointing that the viridiflorus seedlings (like my Mesa Verde) are sterile. 1703 mjsmc is lovely. Does it divide well from the bulbs? Perhaps could be diced?

  2. Hi Bob,

17_03MJ is a first flower on a 4yo seedling. The signs are it will be vigorous. Compared to your (much better) spring flowering Mesa Verde it is closer to jonquilla in size and appearance. The pollen parent is Subtle Satin x fernandesii.

Theogold, which is Viriquilla x fernandesii, is usefully fertile so sometimes these kinds of crosses can lead somewhere but I suspect in this case I have used a less promising fernandesii. A sibling of 17_03MJ will flower in a month or so. It has more than one floret.

I have some seedlings hopefully from viridiflorus x tetraploid jonquilla, which seem true. Some are so vigorous I thought they might flower this year but it seems not. I am hoping these will be a significant advance.

I had some autumn tazetta x viridiflorus and x jonquilla finally flower. Not one was true to cross. I may yet have a genuine an elegans hybrid x viridiflorus (3rd year seedling) but it has been a struggle.
