Betty Bowers

Hi All,

A message to New Zealand members that Betty Bowers, a previous President  and current Vice Patron of the National Daffodil Society passed away in Blenheim yesterday.

Although not active on the daffodil front in recent years Betty was a very well liked and gracious lady, she will be sorely missed.

  1. Thank you Robin.  Betty was a very special lady with a zest for life and a warm welcome for daffodil people passing through Blenheim.  Along with her late husband, Wally, Betty was a keen exhibitor, had served on the NDS Executive and as President. She was a Senior Judge and a Life-member and as Robin says, a current Vice-patron of the Society.  In 1991 Betty was awarded the David Bell Bronze  Medal for services to the National Daffodil Society of NZ.   Betty was 94 when she passed away and had lived alone in her own home up until about six months ago.  Well into her eighties she would drive the 2 hour journey to Nelson to attend get-togethers, shows etc.  The funeral for Betty is on Thursday 28th January at 1-30pm, the venue is the Mayfield Chapel, corner of Hutcheson and Parker Streets, Blenheim.

  2. Leitha and I drove through to Blenheim to attend Betty’s funeral. Four hours each way. The service was a lovely tribute to a very special lady. Wilfred Hall spoke on behalf of the Daffodil Society. He reminded us that Betty was the first lady to be elected on to the NZNDS Executive, the first lady National President, the first person to receive a David Bell Bronze medal, the first lady Life Member and the first lady to be elected Vice Patron of the NDS. She was not an ardent feminist yet was recognized for her skills and personal qualities. We were reminded of her wonderful hospitality which many of us were privileged to partake of. We will all miss her.

    Dave
