Daffodil Flag Flying in Mississippi

‘Monal,’ 2 Y-O, opened bright and beautiful yesterday morning. Fully two weeks early, and well ahead of some other ‘bellweather’ cultivars.

Thank you, Ruth Pardue, for reaching into your memory and insisting, fifteen years ago, that this should be a Wister flower. It’s times like today I wonder why I don’t order a dozen of these early beauties every fall.

I guess we better accept the probability of another early season. I know we all agreed long ago there is no such thing as a “normal’ season.

Loyce McKenzie, now in Zone 8–I think my daffodils were better when I was in Zone 7.

  1. I just got back from visiting family in Charleston, MS.  I was amazed that N. pseudonarcissus was starting to bloom there.  Friends had other daffodils starting to bloom, too.  That area had about 6 inches of rain in the last couple of days and we’ve had about the same in the last week here in the Nashville area.  It’s turned cold again here, so that will slow things down a little.
