Jan Pennings asked that I post this information about the passing of Dr. August (Gus) De Hertogh. Below is a message from Mary Belle who is Dr. De Hertogh’s wife:

“My dear and wonderful Gus died this morning from lung/blood complications. He has been in the hospital for a week under the care of several  specialists. There was no hope for a full recovery so perhaps his death is best.  As you can imagine my heart is sad and lonely. Will try to keep you updated.

Mary Belle”

Below is a link to Dr. De Hertogh’s obituary which details his involvement in horticulture.

To add to President Nancy’s post, Dr. De Hertogh was a featured speaker at the ADS National Convention in 1990, which was held at Callaway Gardens, located in Pine Mountain, Georgia. I was the Convention Chair. Dr De Hertogh was an authority on the the subject of forcing bulbs and he presented on that subject using daffodils. He was a pleasure to interact with and enjoyed his time with us at the convention, bringing his delightful wife, Mary Belle. To raise funds for the Georgia Daffodil Society, we auctioned a daffodil quilt. Gus De Hertogh was the successful bidder. He said it was for his wife.
    With sadness,
