Fertility Update – Div. 6 #2

Lawrence’s excellent post on Div. 6 fertility was much enjoyed. Loved many of the photos. Some truly wonderful flowers in those photos! Well done Lawrence!!!

I am surprised that so many of the World Class Div. 6’s from Grant Mitsch and Elise Havens were not mentioned. As a group, or body of work, they uniformly express a very substantial number of Div. 6 attributes. Many, if not most, have exquisite form that visually look like N. cyclamineus hybrids. They are my “go to” flowers to use as parents in Div. 6 Standards.

‘Wind Dancer’ is a 2000 Registration of a 1991 cross of Phalarope x Trena. It has not been seed fertile here. The pollen is fertile sometimes. A steady grower but slow increaser.

‘Little Lulu’ is 2006 Registration that is almost a Miniature having measurements here in the mid 50mm. Some side stems do measure below 50mm. It is a cross of Brian’s much liked and well colored ‘Reggae’ x ‘Snipe’. It has not been seed fertile here. It is pollen fertile.

‘Butterfly Kiss’ (2005) is from a non traditional cross of a Div. 3, Random Event x Snipe. I have Registered it as an Intermediate 2W-Y as that is the majority of flowers look like. Mentioned because of its free flowering aspect and tremendous increasing ability. Unlike the first two photos, this clone displays true hybrid vigor.

    I’m pretty sure I checked Daffseek for registrations over the last 10 years or so and only John Hunter’s Flight Path stood out as being potentially tetraploid because of the unknown seedling in its pedigree.  My post was by no means a review of the division.

    Your remarks about Wind Dancer suggests it is not a fully fertile tetraploid. Perhaps it is like Roger -I grew it for a while and I think it had some fertility. The triploids too are really nice. Hopefully they will yield good things.
