FW: Historics judging question

All –

This was in response to a question from the New Zealand contingent as to how the ADS handles judging historics…

Lesley, Sara, and Keith,

In the US, the major difference in judging historic daffodils as compared to standard daffodils is that condition in historic daffodils trumps form every time, i.e. twice as many points are given for condition in historic daffodils (40 points) as compared to standard daffodils (20 points) whereas points for form in historics is only 60% (15) of that standard daffodils (25).  Color is worth the same number of points (15) in both historic and standard daffodils.  Likewise, size is worth the same number of points (10) in both historic and standard daffodils.  In historic daffodils, substance and texture combined are worth only 66% (10 points) of that of standard daffodils (15).  Last, pose and stem combined in historic daffodils are worth 66% (10 points) of that of standard daffodils (15).

In the 5th edition (2007) of Handbook or Growing, Exhibiting, and Judging Daffodils, the scale of points for judging standard daffodils is found on page 90 and that of judging historic daffodils is found on page 103.

It is late as I write this response. Thus, I hope that I have been both clear and correct in my respose.
