“galloshes”

Here ( The Netherlands) Narcissi are sold in two kinds: those with leaves that have longer scapes and fetch prices twice as high ( 2-3 Euro the 10) and those without leaves. These are shorter and sold for half the prize. Bulbs of those cut with leaves are grown inside and are mostly thrown away, the others are kept, probably without much damage to the bulb. Sometimes if they have to travel long distances, the lower end is dipped in stearine (from candles) to prevent evaporation. I have seen that too with other cut flowers.
