I’m a new granddad this week. I think…

P1000811This is my 1st baby.  Since I was not either of the parents does that makes me a Granddad?   It was pollinated in 2010.  Out of 800 or so 2 year bulbs it is the 1st and only one to bloom.

It’s been 6 years since I started dabbing pollen.  This is a hobby that takes a lot of patience.

The corona looks like pollen parent, The perianth shaped like seed parent but the color of seed parent.  It is  really kind of an ugly baby but it’s my first.

  1. Hello Bill,

Yes, I think you definitely qualify as a proud, excited granddad, congratulations. Some of the kids will be better than the parents (hopefully) most will not be as good. Some of those genes from way back show up. Some surprises will occur, That’s the excitement and fun of it all.

Yes, you need to be an eternal optimist and have lots of patience to be a hybridizer. But now your initial waiting period is over. You can look foward to new creations each spring.  We looks foward to your new seedlings in the future.

    Regards,

    Larry

  2. Hi Bill,

I think all of us “grandparents” think our babies are beautiful.  After we’ve bloomed some, we get a little more selective.  And down the road it helps if you have a good friend, a really good friend, who can tell it like it is, and can still be your friend.  Fortunately I have such a friend, who kept me from being embarrassed when I wanted to enter my seedlings in a Watrous collection at the national show many years ago.  She said, “Mary Lou, don’t do it.”  And I replied, “But . . . they’re my seedlings.”  She said again, “MARY LOU, DON’T DO IT.”  I looked at her, looked at my seedlings, and I didn’t do it.  As I recall, I did put 5 in a collection, but I don’t think it won anything either.  :-)
