N. viridiflorus and its hybrids

Hallo, folks,

I really want to thank all of you who have sent me infos on cytology, genetic and general Narcissus culture.  This has been great.  Such an inspired group of Narcissus fans.  I hadn’t really expected it.

Well, all these great fotos have sent me on a search for N. viridiflorus and its hybrids, but to little avail.  There is the one source for bulbs in the States, but this is otherwise a scarce product.  Does anyone have seed or bulbs available?  Particularly in Europe.  As I plan a trip to New England next year, I can pick stuff up then, but would like to get a variety of clones to work with.

Harald,
your fotos are an inspiration.

Brian,
the shots of N. miniatus are fascinating.  Do you notice any real physical difference between this species and the diploid N. serotinus?  I’m wondering how one could tell them appart short of counting their chromosomes or test crosses.

Thanks,

  1. Hi Jamie:

    N. serotinus and N.miniatus are easy to tell apart.

    N. serotinus has a yellow corona, N. miniatus has an orange corona
    N. serotinus has an inflated tube that can be striped green over cream, N. miniatus has a straight tube that is solid green.
    N. serotinus has thin flower stems. N. miniatus has thick flower stems
    N. serotinus very very very rarely has more than one flower to the stem. N. miniatus often has more than one flower to the stem.

When do you plan on being in New England? I might be able to provide some bulbs for you if it is in early summer.

    Harold
