N. willkommii

Hi,

I don’t like to do this, but I have some N. willkommii seed that I didn’t use when I planted my daffodil hybridized seeds this year.  They are open pollinated and I feel they will be true to N. willkommii as jonquilla have a habit of self seeding.

I’d like these to go to an experienced daffodil person.  N. willkommii is a member of the N. jonquilla family and smaller in height and size of the bloom than N. jonquilla.  They are fertile both ways.  But they will not sprout and bloom next year.  Try four to five years.

They did well for me in the colder area of N. central Maryland, and after I learned to grow them in hot NC, they are very prolific here.

I think I have enough for two batches.  My N. willkommii, that I call little Willy, produced a lot of bloom and a lot of seed this year.

G’day Clay,how strange, just yesterday I sent an email on daffseek saying that the website does not have any images of N. willkommii and would they want any?The web site did not allow me to use the ”contribute photographs” button so I sent the question via ”questions or comments” under the HELP section.Too early of course to have had a reply.

    The last part of your message is hidden behind the pictures. I’m not skilled enough with Daffnet to make the pictures move.  Nice pictures.  I really like the way you photographed them.  I saved them with your name as credit on my computer.

    As for the number of blooms, I’ve have had anywhere from one to five blooms.  I also have a little monster in my hybridizing and that others have use successfully in shows, my seedling #11-11.  It’s taller than N. willcommii, but not as tall as the pollen parent N. jonquilla.  Blooms about the size of N. willcommii and very reluctant to bulb divide.

Paul and Clay, I grow N. willkommii here in middle TN and it does well.  I just posted two photos to Daffseek of what Nancy Wilson listed as N. willkommii (Rod Barwick).  I purchased probably 1-2 bulbs from her in 2003; the photo was taken in 2013 and you can see it’s a healthy clump.  It usually has from 1-3 blooms per stem for me.

    You are correct.  The first year down I usually get one floret per stem, but after they “settle” in I usually get two to three.  However, I have gotten bonus N. willcommii with five.  So I gave the range that I had seen the booms not the average.  The average for me is about three after they get acclimated to the area in which they are planted.  I don’t know where I got mine, probably from Nancy Wilson but I have had them about 20 years and they keep blooming beautifully each year, except for the year that I transferred them all from Maryland to (Hot Dry) Eastern NC.  That’s when I nearly lost them.

  6. I’d love to grow them out.  I had some 2 year div 10 seeds you gave me bloom this year.  I’ve never had much luck with Div 10 but they did great.

  7. Hi Bill,Thanks.  It’s good to know the Div 10 seedlings are beginning to bloom.  I think Div 10 should do well for you in WAAll the N. willkommii seed are gone.Clay
