Narcissus x xanthochlorus

One year ago I published a picture of N. x xanthochlorus ( N. cavanillesii x N. viridiflorus) on Daffnet. This year  three bulbs will flower. Two  flowers allready opened (see photos).  N. x xantthochlorus is allotetraploid and therefore seed- and pollen- fertile.

  1. So what are your proposed crosses?  You can’t leave that luscious looking pollen just sit there.  Can you freeze some pollen and use it later this spring?  Maybe self them?

  2. Donna,

Crosses with standard daffodils , jonquilla hybrids like Hillstar, and viridiflorus hybrids like Emerald Sea, and with many diploid species should be possible. In this spring I   put frozen pollen on Lennymore and Rocoza and in autumn 2013 I used it as a seed parent for  Ballygowan x N. viridiflorus. In all cases a got some seed grains.

  3. Theo,

Thanks for sharing the photos.  Its nice to see that more bulbs are flowering this year.  Hope you get some good things from your crosses.
