There are always a few varieties , at every show , that don,t enjoy as many days out as they deserve , – or perhaps that we had not noticed before .A few from Otaki that caught my eye .
CLANDONATION – 2Y – Y , is a very big Graham Phillips recent release . Big , bold and very golden , a few at Otaki stood out .
OHAU MAGIC , 1Y – O , a Peter Irwin registration , is perhaps the strongest coloured yellow / orange trumpet in NZ .Diane and Peter , due to Peters failing health , moved on from the acres of daffs , two springs ago but we rescued some of their best seedlings . The stock is now doing well and more will be seen of this bright show trumpet .
Diane is now growing a lot of daffs , particularly the smaller ones , in pots .She displayed a few of her well grown plants at the show and there were two that I had not seen before .
BRUCES JOY , – 6Y – O , from Bruce Irwin , shown proudly by mum , is a very vigorous cyclaminius hybrid with good size and colour .
NIKKI DOODLE , 6Y – Y , from Colin Crotty , was another I had not seen before .Quite a different style to the other pots on the table .
BULBICODIUMS are a group that I do not grow . Wayne picked the smallest vase in the show as best vase , 3 of a kind . An interesting choice – had us all examining it,s merits and contrasting it with the other vase of bulbicodiums there ;
Also with the redcup premier which was probably the largest and tallest flower in the show .
BALLISTIC , 4Y – R , was having a good season and dominated the doubles class and in a few collections . The wet winter was love /hate or the doubles . Full heads and heavy rain and over they went as mudlarks ; it was warm and wet and they were tall and big this year .
I enjoy our NZ raised class . Brian MacKenzie had two nice vases . He was showing some well grown flowers this spring .
Fiordland Star – 2W – W ; Sulphur Monarch 1Y – Y ; Valley Glow , 2Y – R .
Gold Lake – 11Y – Y ; Florence Joy 2W – W ; Champeen 2W – Y .
We should be at Tazetta peak season in most seasons at Otaki ; this year we were past peak and the National exhibitors were holding their stars for Gisborne .However we still manage a good , and very fragrant , table .
Thanks so much for sharing; lovely photos; certainly a wonderful change from photos of floods, hurricanes, fires and other disasters. The US is getting hammered right now. Our hearts go out to all those in harms way.
