Poet variation

I have been following the discussion of poets with interest. We were in the Pyrenees last year and looked at thousands of poets and found several without rims. I did not pay much attention to the 3 up and 3 down stamens then but we did find a few where the stamens are similar to those of Max’s poets. Within species there is enormous variation. Max’s poets are actually 3 up and 3 down but the two rings of stamens are not as widely separated as in some others. Look carefully at the montages below. Each was taken of the variation at a different locality. In a few the 3 up 3 down is not very pronounced. Note that in Baqueira we also found several with very pale yellow perianths – no pseudonarcissus were nearby – so much for poet whiteness.

  1. Harold,

Thanks for the photos of the various poets. Maybe we can get Nancy to include them on DaffSeek.

I’ve also seen one with a pale yellow perianth, but I thought the flower was immature. I’ll have to see if I can find the slide.

  2. I would love to have a bulb from each of those pictures. Poets are the daffodils of my childhood and fascinate/delight me to this day.
