It is with sadness that I post news of the passing today of Peter Irwin , a NZ Daffodil Society member since the 1980’s.Peter and Diane were regular exhibitors at both local and national shows for many seasons , firstly from their home garden at Titahi Bay ; then for a short time at Te Horo and until about four years ago from a large commercial garden at Ohau . This was sold about four years ago as Peter’s health deteriorated and eventually he was moved to rest home care . to I will remember Peter as a very good judge of daffs and a master stager , – always presenting neat vases , particularly 3’s . It surprised many that they could win the large British Raisers class at the Nationals from their small Titahi Bay garden but the staging and balance was , as always , immaculate .Peters breeding efforts were focused on the difficult yellow / orange trumpets and he has left us some fine flowers including Ohau Magic , Ohau Brilliance Ohau Phoenix amongst the best and as they are becoming more widely distributed are achieving due show success .I also appreciated Peters willingness to help with the set up and downing of our local show – always a reliable helper . Peter and Diane were well travelled in their daffodil journey with several trips to the U K ; the last for the 2008 World Convention spring .
Our thoughts are with Diane , son Bruce , Daughter Anne and husband Matt and their two grandchildren .
Peters service will be held at the Harvey Bowler Funeral Chapel , Oxford Street , Levin at 2 pm , Monday 30 April .
