Rose of Sharon

Hi Folks,

I have a request for information on a tazetta supposedly native to Israel and may be commonly known as the Rose of Sharon.

I have searched many areas of Google, consulted the RHS Register, gone through John Blanchard’s book and can’t seem to find a definitive answer. There is an indication that the Biblical ‘lily of the valley’ may be a narcissus or that the ‘rose of Sharon’ may also be a narcissus. For some reason Gloriosus seems to have Biblical connotations to me but there is no information on its origin.

Is there a narcissus which is native to Israel?
Is there any connection with the names outlined above?

Thanks in anticipation.

Dave

  1. I have since found another website, combining Israel and narcissus, which has photos etc. I think I’m right suggesting Gloriosus is the tazetta involved. Your comments are still welcome.

  2. Dear Dave,

I just returned from Israel yesterday.  One native daffodil is the Mediterranean Sea Daffodil, which I saw blooming in the wild on the cliffside along the bike path not far from the marina in Tel Aviv.

    Best regards,
    Niels

  3. Thanks Niels. Your viewing is most interesting. I wonder if you could describe the flowers you saw.
