Symposiums at the 2013 ADS Convention

I recently had some time to review my pictures and notes from the 2013 ADS Convention.  I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all of the speakers and excellent presentations at the Convention this year.  All of the presentations were given by speakers that are experts in their field of endeavor and each of them gave well organized and professionally delivered presentations. Wow…job well done!

I would like to highlight the Symposium presented by Chriss Rainey – “Understanding ADS Awards” at the 2013 ADS Convention.

As you probably know, I just became an accredited ADS judge last year…so I’m very new to the whole daffodil judging arena.  When Chriss announced the topic of her presentation, I really didn’t know what to expect.  Would this be a review of ADS Awards chapter in the Judging Handbook?

It certainly was NOT…I was pleasantly surprised about the origin and progression of the ADS awards and ribbons throughout the years at the American Daffodil Society.  A fascinating evolution of awards unfolded before my eyes as Chriss explained the reasoning, and sometimes the thought process, that went into each award.  Yes…seeing all those real ADS ribbons definitely added to Chriss’s presentation.  Thanks so much to Chriss for her very informative presentation.

I hope that Chriss will be given the opportunity for a repeat performance at a future ADS convention.  Her presentation would also be a great addition to the ADS Judges School. :-)

  1. Chriss’  seminar was amazing! Not only did I learn a lot, myself, but her mode of presentation was very effective. Everyone I spoke to afterwards was full of praise. Thank you Chriss!

  2. During the past few years, I have been aware of several new show classes and was happy to see the new awards for “classics” and earlier some of the collections of five which helped me qualify to become an ADS judge.

Chriss’ seminar, by describing all the awards in chronological order and together, was enlightening and really showed the evolution and reasons for ADS awards.  I wondered why the ADS had so many ribbons and awards and it seemed a little excessive to me. But now that Chriss has shown the history and reasons, it now makes sense to me and I no longer think there are too many awards.

    Thank you Chriss!

  3. Chriss did a magnificent job on this presentation and has promised to turn it into a definitive Journal article, probably for March of 2014, just in time to educate all the exhibitors and show growers of next season.
