Dear All,

Last night at the Daffodil Society Show Dinner my good friend Tony James was awarded Life Membership of The Daffodil Society for services to the Society and the Daffodil World.  A true ambassador and well deserved award.

  1. We have many memories of Tony’s visits to the states and his help at our daffodil shows.  We certainly agree that Tony has been a daffodil ambassador and his involvement in daffodil events around the world is impressive.

Nancy and I are members of The Daffodil Society and I can truly say that I can not think of the society without thinking of Tony James.

    Congratulations Tony!

  2. Congratulations, Tony!

I have many fond memories of times spent with you and Pat spent visiting daffodil friends down-under. Especially one special time while visiting Fred Silcock in Mount Macedon when Pat interrupted our daffodil reverie to walk us into a nearby eucalyptus grove to view a koala in the notch of a tree.

  3. Sincere congratulations to you, Tony, on being awarded Life Membership of The Daffodil Society.  You are indeed a great ambassador for the daffodil and the visits that you and Pat have made to New Zealand are most fondly remembered by daffodil folk here.  A well-deserved honour.

Denise McQuarrie (Secretary) on behalf of the National Daffodil Society of New Zealand Inc, and also on a personal level, best wishes to you and Pat.

  4. Tony, congratulations for a well-deserved honor. You have been such an outstanding citizen of the whole daffodil world. I especially enjoyed sharing the 2012 New Zealand tour with you and Pat and observing how meticulously yoo set up your photography.

  5. Congratulations Tony- An honour truly deserved. The year has passed very fast since we met  & sat with you  at the dinner last year where you and all the other members made us so very welcome. I’m sure you all celebrated well into the evening. Margaret & George Seconi NZ

  6. Leitha and I are so pleased for Tony. He is a great ambassador for Daffodils and for the Daffodil Society. An honour well deserved.
Three little anecdotes of our times with Tony and Pat.

For many years George Tarry sent slides of the UK Daffodil season to Peter Ramsay who then sent the slides around the country. Tony took over when George finished. In May each year we received a box of slides with a taped commentary or a printed copy of all the major entries in the British shows. As you know Tony’s photography was superb and we appreciated keeping up to date with winning flowers, exhibitors and new seedlings. Daffnet now fills this role. Tony the ambassador.

On a visit to the main RHS show at Vincent Square I helped Tony stage his only entry in the show. I think it was for the Devonshire Trophy which required 15 varieties, three stems of each. We had a delightful evening of sharing and chatting. Tony won the class. I am sure the other entry had better flowers but Tony’s careful staging carried favour with the judges. He was delighted as it was a tough class to win. Tony the exhibitor.

On a visit to Christchurch I took Tony and Pat to visit the wonderful garden of Rex Stevenson at Cheviot. Whilst driving I felt tired and considered getting Tony to drive for a time. I thought I could cope but moments later we were careering down a bank. We snapped off an eight inch fence post plumb in the middle of the front bumper. I am sure that this and the high tensile fence wire turned the car along a strip of paddock which had about twelve yards between the fence and a forty foot drop into the Greta Stream. After a little walk around we found a nearby gate and continued our drive with frequent stops to top up the radiator. We could not kill that Toyota Corolla. Tony the survivor.

Two months ago a tourist van went over this same bank and into the stream with loss of life. Leitha was in China at the time our crash occurred. It was at 7:30am Chinese time about when Leitha would have been saying some prayers for us. Take your pick, Divine intervention or coincidence.

We should not forget too the friendship and support of Pat. To us she is also a wonderful friend and supporter of Tony.

I trust, Ian, that you make sure Tony sees these messages for him.
