Tui

Hello All,

This posting is for Brian D. and other bird lovers,  For many years now we have been trying to attract one of our native birds, the tui, back to our property, primarily by planting trees and shrubs which carry berries and nectar  Over the last three years we have had a few sightings and now we have a quite sizable population.  Tui do not nest more than 150 yards from where they have been hatched.  We now think that some of the birds seen here are pairs and are hoping they will nest in the Spring.

This photo was taken yesterday in a tree adjacent to our house.  The common name of tui is “parson bird” because of the white tufts.  The bird is singing – his mouth is wide open!

I am enjoying the discussion on judging – relevant world wide!

Cheers,

Peter

  1. Thanks, Peter – what a neat-looking bird! Ethel Smith in MN where we are busy refrigerating flowers for our way-too-late show – we’ll see how long you can actually keep flowers under chilly conditions – this year spring is SO early!

  2. How nice to know that sometimes, to help a species along, all you need to do is plant something and provide the privacy!

  3. Thanks Peter,
Just catching up on e-mails, we did see the Tui twixe on our last visit, Firstly at the lovely McQuarrie property and then in the Park at Invercargill – but they were elusive and we did not really achieve worthy pictures,
