Winter woes

This has been one of the coldest winters in the Cincinnati area in years–they say since 1977-78.  It’s been so cold that the temperature in my garage has been way below freezing for several days at a time.  Well, I couldn’t let my little pots of bulbs just freeze!  So now they’re spread around on my kitchen counters.  While this will keep the bulbs alive, the abrupt change in temperature hasn’t been good for them.  An inch or more of yellow new growth is showing on many.  One pot that had lots of buds now has buds that look like they’re drying up.  The bulbs spent a few days inside a couple weeks ago, but this time it looks like it’s going to be closer to 10 days inside.  ‘Emerald Monarch’ has opened, about six weeks later than last year, probably because I began watering later this year.  Two stems are in bloom, with two more to follow.

  1. Lovely little thing; know about the garage problem I put a pot out there of something I made to cool; and it froze!
