The Miniatures Section of the show had few entries and no big collections. I didn’t look at the entry tags (after judging) to see if anyone besides Steve entered. Here are the award winners.
The Miniature Gold Ribbon is for the best miniature in the show excluding the Container Section. The Miniature White Ribbon is for the best set of 3 miniatures. Both were won by ‘Little Soldier’ 10Y-Y exhibited by Steve Vinisky. The flower at the right of the set of 3 won the Miniature Gold Ribbon. Some of you may know that ‘Little Soldier’ is not on the approved miniature list since it’s normally too big to be considered a miniature; however, the rules allow the exhibitor to enter any flower in the miniature classes. The judges then decide whether to accept the unapproved specimen as small enough.
The Miniature Rose Ribbon is for the best miniature seedling exhibited by its originator in the show, excluding the Container Section. The winner was V04-204-16 5Y-W (N. triandrus capax x N. triandrus pulchellus) exhibited by Steve Vinisky. This flower was in his Miniature Red-White-Blue Ribbon winning collection.
The Miniature Red-White-Blue Ribbon is for the best collection of 5 miniatures of American breeding. Flowers in the winning collection are: V02-57-14 8W-P (‘Brooke Ager’ x N. dubius), V04-166-14 9W-GRR (‘Red Hugh’ sdlg. x (‘Haiku’ x ‘Lutana’)), V06-83-4 5W-W (N. triandrus capax x ‘Chipper’), V04-204-6 5Y-W (N. triandrus capax x N. triandrus pulchellus), DB009-5 8W-Y (Bankhead) (‘Pink China’ x N. dubius micranthus). This includes the Miniature Rose Ribbon winner second from the right as it was staged. You’ll notice I groomed the lowest floret a bit before photographing it by itself. Do you suppose it might have won the Miniature Gold Ribbon with the added bit of grooming? Unlike standard daffodils where all collections of 5 are eligible for the Purple Ribbon, the collections of 5 American-bred miniatures are not eligible for the Lavender Ribbon. There being no eligible entries for the Lavender Ribbon, the Lavender Ribbon was not awarded.
There were no other winners of ADS awards for miniatures, so this concludes my postings of the results of the Portland show.
