Portland show – Purple Ribbon winner

The Purple Ribbon is for the best collection of 5 standard daffodils excluding the American-bred and reverse bicolor collections. The flowers in the winning collection ware Back row: Cape Cornwall 2Y-YYO Great Gatsby 2Y-R Pacific Rim 2Y-YYR Front row: Polmenor 2W-P John Peace 2W-P The exhibitor was your truly. I had though the bloom of John Peace was the sure winner of best in show, but the judges did not think so. The Pacific Rim behind it was the third daffodil that survived to the last round of balloting for best in show. I’m not sure how the Great Gatsby grew so large. People asked me how it and the three Crackington’s grew to their sizes. Both have been down for three years and are not newly acquired bulbs. My only explanation is that I scattered a lot of corn gluten over the beds last fall as a weed preventer. Yes, corn gluten is sold at garden centers for this purpose. I learned only recently that it also adds nitrogen to the soil. I can tell you that it did in fact prevent the usual weeds from germinating in my daffodil beds.
