The value of photos of seedlings and their parentages

The ADS Rose Ribbon and Miniature Rose Ribbon winners are seedlings. And the recent photos of seedlings posted by Jason Delaney, John McLennan, Steve Vinisky and others remind me of something the late Charles Wheatley told me years ago. He wanted not only to see the seedlings (or images thereof) but to learn their parentages. Some of you already know that Charles was a daffodil hybridizer long before Daffseek and its genealogical chart drawing capability (thanks to Lachlan Keown) became available. As a hybridizer, he was always interested in what different parents could produce. In those days, the ADS Databank was one source of information, but it didn’t have pictures. Photos of Rose Ribbon winners were very interesting to him provided the parentage was also given; that provided the latest information on what the parents could produce. Photos of seedlings don’t go into Daffseek, so the Daffnet postings of their photos and parentages are the source of the most recent information on hybridization possibilities. I’m sure all the hybridizers subscribing to Daffnet realized this a long time ago, but I thought I should post this thought to Daffnet so that those who don’t hybridize (but depend on the hybridizers for new cultivars) can better appreciate the value of photos of seedlings (that you can’t buy yet) on Daffnet.
