Unusual observation

Here in central Ohio we’re expecting a hard freeze in the 20s tonight, after a rapid early and mid season brought on by days in the 70s and 80s.
As I was fevorishly picking this evening to try and hold some back for my cut flower sales, I ‘think’ I noted something I hadn’t before. As is normal, the blooms had turned their backs to the wind, but I also think I saw the following:
Blooms, and especially buds which were to the point where they switch from straight up, to nodding head, had gone well beyond that — the heads had drooped way down, as if doing whatever they can to protect themselves. It was windy and still only in the 50s when I observed this (i.e. none was close to actually freezing yet). It was particularly noticeable in many of the historics but not limited to them.
Has anyone else every observed this reaction?
