The Livermore daffodil show was March 1 and 2 at Alden Lane Nursery. The Northern California Daffodil Society is fortunate that this is a locally owned and operated nursery that supports local gardening activities such as our daffodil show. NCDS has had shows at other venues in the past. Our association with Alden Lane Nursery was a result of late member Wayne Steele knowing Jack and Ruth Williams who established the nursery and their daughter Jacquie who now owns the nursery. It has been a mutually beneficial association.

Anyway, this is the first of three posts I’ll make about this year’s show. In this post I’ll cover the ADS awards for standard daffodils that involve only a single cultivar. We had 300 entries (yes, it came out to exactly 300 when I counted them) by 14 exhibitors with a total stem count of 769. Bob Spotts was winner of the Silver Ribbon with 45 blues.

Winner of the Gold and Rose Ribbons was Bob Spotts’ seedling 1-1-61 1Y-Y. The Gold Ribbon is for the best standard daffodil in the show excluding the container section. The Rose Ribbon is for the best standard seedling in the show excluding the container section. Notice that the ADS now allows standards in the Historic Section to be eligible for the Gold Ribbon. An historic daffodil is not likely to be the best in the show, but the rules are now simpler.
