We had a number of different trumpets at our early show and an interesting discussion started when we moved a few vases to the correct class before judging started .The vase was of WHITFORD SUNSET , staged by David L as a div 2 , which it clearly measured . Then I asked for a colour coding on a vase of 3 That I had previously posted as White / pink .It was unanimous – need my eyes tested .John H had some fine trumpet seedlings there , most were TE RANGI PAI Sdlgs , good form , shortish stems as it often gives . Here are a few with comments – we all agreed that NZ was probably behind the North in coloured trumpets .
WHITFORD SUNRISE – 1W – O , a Max Hamiton registration , early season , usually just measures trumpet , – well short here . It has given Whitford Sunset , much later and a definite improvement ..
JFM 10 – 43 , — I was told it was ORANGE , – measured trumpet , it consistent but not quite of top show standard . Next to Whit Sunrise
TE RANGI PAI 1W – P , – Another Max Hamilton registration ; John Hollever grows it well but difficult to get tall stems .J H has some nice T R P seedlings , very useful early …
Two more seedling trumpets from J H .Do they have the T R P look ; – they had the good shoulders and short stems – both attractive .
No yellow / orange trumpets at the show but two nice types out in the last few days
UNCLE DUNCAN , – 1Y – O , very reliable here , – never big but consistent ,. I understand it has much more trumpet colour in NZ .Has been a good parent – and I have a few in the pipeline
J F M DEMMO Sdlg . Easily measures trumpet , mid size 100- 105 mm , colours to deep orange quite quickly .Has the same light stem as Demmo but plant is quite strong . A definete keeper but early for most shows ..
I have been crossing a few trumpets , both white and yellow backs but getting trumpet measurements is not easy .
Wil finish with two Doubles the first BALLISTIC is tall and good size .
BALLISTIC
ORANGE FLUSHED , 4O – O — Breeding , — RED HOT – X – TONGA – , attractive apricot colour , flowering in the shade , – only 90 mm – from two small parents .
