The 2016 Murphys daffodil show (March 19-20) was once again held at Kautz Ironstone Vineyards simultaneously with the town’s Irish Day celebration. (The Murphy brothers were Irish.) We had 295 entries and 567 stems from at least 13 exhibitors. Due to the early bloom season, this relatively late show was smaller than in previous years. Here are the ADS award winners that involved only a single cultivar.
The Gold Ribbon is for the best standard daffodil excluding the Container Section. The winner was ‘Crackington’ 4Y-O exhibited by Kirby Fong. It’s uncommon in American daffodil shows for anything outside Divisions 1, 2, and 3 to win the Gold Ribbon.
The Rose Ribbon is for the best seedling originated by its exhibitor excluding the Container Section. The winner was 3-21-16 7YYG-GGO exhibited by Bob Spotts.
The Miniature Gold Ribbon is for the best miniature daffodil excluding the container-grown section. The Miniature Rose Ribbon is for the best miniature daffodil seedling exhibited by its originator. The winner was 03-036-1 8W-P exhibited by Harold Koopowitz and Marilynn Howe. This seedling is going to be named ‘Nancy’s Fancy’.
The White Ribbon is for the best set of 3 standard daffodils, and the Intermediate 3-Stem Ribbon is for the best set of 3 intermediates. (An intermediate size daffodil is still a standard daffodil.) The winner was this set of ‘Pogo’ 3W-GYO exhibited by Bob Spotts.
The Miniature White Ribbon is for the best set of 3 miniature daffodils. The winner was ‘Xica’ 11aY-Y exhibited by Harold Koopowitz and Marilynn Howe.
The best intermediate is selected from the Intermediate Section and the standard collections, so we don’t have to search the entire show. The winner was ‘Pogo’ 3W-GYO which was the center bloom in the White Ribbon winner. The exhibitor was Bob Spotts.
The best bloom in the Historic Section was ‘Geranium’ 8W-O (1930) exhibited by Albert Ehlings. The Historic Section is for cultivars registered before 1940.
The best set of 3 in the Historic Section was ‘Sweetness’ 7Y-Y (1939) exhibited by Steve Hampson.
Classics are standard cultivars registered between 1940 and 1969 inclusive. For the Classics Sections there is an award for the best bloom and an award for the best single stem exhibit. The winner of both awards was ‘Merlin’ 3W-YYR (1956) exhibited by Steve Hampson.
The best set of 3 in the Classics Section was ‘Golden Dawn’ 8Y-O (1958) exhibited by Albert Ehlings.
The best bloom in the Youth Section was ‘Rapture’ 6Y-Y exhibited by Devon Oase. Someone mentioned to me he’s just celebrated his sixth birthday.
The best set of 3 in the Youth Section was ‘Ceylon’ 2Y-O exhibited by Devon Oase.
The best bloom in the Small Grower Section was ‘Bridal Crown’ 4W-Y exhibited by Albert Ehlings.
The miniature grown and shown in a container was ‘Tiny Bubbles’ 12Y-Y exhibited by Steve Hampson.
This is not an ADS award, but we borrowed the idea from the Corona del Mar show of having the public vote for their favorite daffodil. The winner was ‘Southern Hospitality’ 4Y-R.
